SiteHound frequently asked questions

What is SiteHound and will it replace my other firewall, anti spam tools and virus scanner?

The programs mentioned scan your computer for any suspicious software.
SiteHound quasi scans the internet to warn you about sites, when you enter them, if they are suspicious. It will not replace your other software and it will not work like a firewall.
SiteHound appears as a small tool bar within your Internet Explorer/Firefox browser window. It provides protection by displaying a warning only when you are about to enter a site posing a likely threat. SiteHound never blocks you from entering a website, instead it provides a warning and information about the threat so you can make an informed decision about whether to enter the site or not.
Similarly if you think a website provides a potential threat you can report it to us, which in turn notifies the SiteHound community at large. SiteHound Administrators check all websites reported, so as to guarantee that only valid sites are blocked. This solution enables security conscious web users to work together to effectively combat spyware, fraud, scams and other Internet threats before they enter a user’s computer.
SiteHound provides an innovative way to protect users by identify the true details of the website you are dealing with.
SiteHound’s features include:
  1. Alerts - indicate whether the site contains any of the following – Fraudulent claims or scams; Offensive material; Security vulnerabilities; Spyware or Adware; Spam related material; Content deemed to be unsafe. Specifically, SiteHound blocks these categories: Adult, Spyware, Spam Advertising, Phishing, Possible scam or fraud, Misleading or false advertising, Pharming, Rogue or suspect product, Adware, Malware or virus.
  2. Site Information Button – shows the user on a world map where the website is located and who owns it.
  3. Site Information Window – shows the user the site they are really visiting, which may not always be obvious with fraudulent sites.
  4. Report Button – allows users the ability to report suspicious or know malicious websites to the SiteHound team and therefore warn others as part of a global crime fighting community.

If you logon to GMail, look in the top right for a link named "Older Version", this will use the older GMail interface which does not cause these speed issues.

My SiteHound user ID is coming up as invalid

Ensure you have not entered any trailing spaces at the beginning or end of your ID.

Most often, the problem is due to installing SiteHound with other security software such as real time spyware scanners enabled. This removes certain parts of the installation and therefore the ID may display as invalid. Removing SiteHound and reinstalling it with all security software disabled (That includes virus scanners, anti spyware tools and even tools like tweakXP) should fix the problem.

The SiteHound toolbar is not displayed. What can I do?

Internet Explorer
This is due to having the Internet Explorer toolbar "locked" when installing SiteHound.
Click here to open a short flash tutorial on how to unlock the Internet Explorer toolbar, or follow the text instructions.

If these steps still do not make the toolbar visible, Internet Explorer may be set to not allow third-party plugins. To check this option, go to your Internet Explorer>tools>internet options>Advanced tab, Enable the "Enable third-party browser extensions" check box. Spyware may also interfere with Internet Explorer plugins, so do a spyware scan if in doubt (using a reputable scanner like Ad-Aware or Spyware Doctor).
Also check that SiteHound is enabled in Internet Explorer>tools>manage Add-ons?
Note that you may have to log off and back on for Internet Explorer to begin using the newly-installed toolbar.
If it is still not visible then use the repair option.
There is a repair option when you click on your desktop on Start>Programs>Firetrust>SiteHound. Please use the repair option and see if it works.

Firefox
You will need to be using Firefox version 1.5 or later. Click the View menu item and navigate to Toolbars. Ensure the item SiteHound is ticked.

If you have paid and are a registered user of SiteHound, you will receive emails when new updates to SiteHound are available.

If you are using the free version of SiteHound, you will need to check our site regularly for any new updates to SiteHound.

Update failed, what can I do?

This is most likely due to other security software being present on your computer during installation of SiteHound.

Please uninstall SiteHound and reinstall it but with all security software disabled.
To Uninstall SiteHound click on Start>Programs>Firetrust>Sitehound>Uninstall

Ensure that all virus scanners like McAfee or spyware tools like Spysweeper are disabled during installation. We have had some reports from other users that some security tools are removing certain features during the installation process. SiteHound uses BHO (Browser Helper Objects) technologies, which allows it to integrate into Internet Explorer, however these same technologies are also used by some Adware programs and therefore some anti Adware programs may prevent SiteHound from a complete and proper installation.

If you use an anti-spyware program with real-time protection features, you may receive two alerts - one for the toolbar and one for a browser helper object (BHO). Be sure to allow both to be installed for the toolbar to work properly.
If the toolbar doesn't appear, click the View menu and point to Toolbars. There will be a new item that reads SiteHound. Click this item to display the toolbar.
Please use the repair option and see if it works then.
Once the toolbar is displayed, paste your user ID into SiteHound.
Paste your user ID in Internet Explorer/Firefox>Sitehound>Options>accounts Details>Enter your SiteHound ID
Update SiteHound. If the update fails, make sure that SiteHound_Update.exe in C:\Program Files\FireTrust\SiteHound has internet access through your firewall.
