MailWasher Pro 6.0 released

Posted on 4 May, 2008

MailWasher Pro version 6.0 contains many exciting new features and improvements to make it easier than ever for users to block spam.

New features include the Action column which gives users a better and easier way to block spam and at the same time, train MailWasher Pro to recognise any spam they get. Many users were not aware they could train MailWasher Pro, or found training difficult to work. These changes recognise and resolve these problems.

Internal spam algorithms which work with the community spam filter, FirstAlert! have been updated to reflect the ever changing nature of spam. This has the effect of FirstAlert! being more accurate and hence able to block more spam.

MailWasher Pro has also been given a face lift. It's now more colorful with new icons and easier to work with.

Other factors which increase usability are adding a recycle bin icon to the front of MailWasher Pro so users can rescue accidentally deleted email. Incidentally, many users were unaware there was a recycle bin at all. MailWasher Pro settings are now included in one area for ease of configuration and use.

Other changes are minor and include many bug fixes.

Very soon, we'll add a permanent beta version to the site so incorporate many of the changes users have asked for over the years. For those users who like to test new features and changes will find this a welcome addition.

A newsletter will be sent out to all registered MailWasher Pro users over the next week informing them of, and recommending they upgrade to MailWasher Pro version 6.0

What size is the download for MWP 6.0
Can I buy it on CD?

I keep "selling" MWP, and I hope that has done well for you.
Just my way of saying THANKS and also a means to helping friends with their email.
At one time my email ran to over 50% trash.
Thanks to MWP I seldom get trash mail any more.
The feature I appreciate more than any in MWP is that I CONTROL my email and the way MWP functions.

The Firefox works beautifully and I also recommend it.

Hi John

The download is just under 7MB, and you can buy it on CD if you like, though the lifespan of a CD copy would only last until we released another version.  If you have a CD writer yourself feel free to download and make a copy, otherwise you can always download the latest version from out website.

Sorry to say but I don't like the new layout (just my taste):

Despite of being a great program...

- icons are far too big
- taskbar icon is terrible as well as the desktop icon which is even worst as before
- the options pane is too small and can't be altered

Will keep using version 5.3

Can you confirm that if I buy MailWasher Pro 6, I will obtain free lifetime upgrades?

If it is so, I will buy MailWasher Pro 6 as soon as I read your positive answer.

I had 5.3 and just downloaded and installed 6.0. It went in smoothly and did not require reentry of serial number or anything. It retained the previous mail acounts and other setting. I like the new look.

can you make a vista sidebar gadget that Mailwasher works from.
It could be very useful as an e-mail alert

I used to use Mailwasher but I changed computers and didn't reinstall it. I think it is the best for spam problems.

I used to use Mailwasher and liked it very much.

I have been totally unimpressed with this update, there is no way this would qualify for such a large point jump to version 6.0 when there is nothing major in the update. Outside of the optimisation of interaction with First Alert, which as I say I don't use, the only thing in this update for me is cosmetic.

I don't see anything but cosmetics which for me have been screwed up. I noticed that the drop down list of accounts (Check Mail) doesn't drop directly down as v5.2 did, but is offset.

This wouldn't be a problem if you want MW to check all accounts at once but I don't, so my default accounts are those that are the most active. I have many other accounts that I check less frequently and to check those you click the drop down list arrow, now you have to reposition the cursor to the left and not directly down to the other accounts you want to check.

The arrow to activate the drop-down list is also very small resulting in frequent checking all the default email accounts for email.

I'm trying to live with this in the forlorn hope that it will be fixed quickly and I simply can't see that happening any time soon. So it may be back to version 5.2/3 and I hate backward steps.

Upgrade to v6 from vcom antispam 5?

Is this upgrade possible? What cost, if any?

Submitted by chris on Sat, 2007-10-20 00:40.

We don't have an upgrade version for VCOM yet, not sure how far away that is

Your statistic tool offers some great information on total emails and spam being received, as well as other details. I would suggest keeping a daily record of Summary Fields for the reporting so we can clear the recycle bin anytime without loosing our statistics. I don't see any reason to keep tons of past emails in the recycle bin if I'd like a yearly summary reporting time frame. The recycle bin works well as a frontend abiltiy to temporarily hold emails in case one is accidentally deleted. Other than this I would prefer to just clear the mails. Daily Summary Numbers are all that should be needed for statistical reporting. I would like to see in a year's time the summary statistics for emails received vs spam. It would also make a strong point for using Mailwasher from your side.
Another note: Pie chart--the legend table is hidden behind the pie chart. There seems to be no way to see the hidden part of the legend.??
Mailwasher does a great job identifying spam and bouncing it at the server before it reaches our PC. While all new releases will have fixes and improvements for its users, overall you have great product. Congratulations

I thought I should make you aware that bouncing mail actually does more harm than good, as the email address that you are bouncing to has almost always been forged, which means that you are effectively spamming an innocent person.

In my opinion, this function should be removed from Mailwasher, as it is widely regarded as bad practice.

On the other hand, Mailwasher is EXCELLENT if configured to lookup each received email in the three main DNS Blacklists (DNSBL - Spamcop, Spamhaus SBL+SBL and Sorbs), and to report to Spamcop any that it is not aware of. Using this method, you are not only fighting spam, but also helping a lot of other email users too.

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Wed, 2007-12-05 19:33.

It is the bouncing of spam (as soon as possible)that makes Mailwasher so effective. Since using this feature, spam has become minimal. In fact I have gone over a week at times with none. Stop bouncing and the spam rate increases exponentially. Sometimes the DNSBL gets it wrong, and if I were to rely on it, I would (and have) lost e-mails I wanted. I'd prefer to know if one of my addresses was being spoofed so I could do something about it. Rock on Mailwasher; it's the Spammer's nemesis.

Excelent update. Now it is easier to make a decision regarding spam notification to "First Alert!".
Just one "bug": drop down list arrow, is criticaly positioned. Have to be clearly separated from "Check Mail" icon to select "not default" accounts.

I'm probably being naive here. Mailwasher works fine but I have to send messages from Internet Explorer and, as I do so, some incoming messages sneak in without going through Mailwasher.
How do I prevent this happening?

Yes, you can set your GMail account to have POP3 access.  Here's a link to help you do that

Since I installed an new firewall from ZoneAlarm, Mailwasher Pro 5:3 functions only after I open Microsoft Outlook and ordering "Senden und Empfangen" and not befor, although I have opened all accesses possible for the MWP in the programlist of ZoneAlarm.
When I want to start with MWP first,I get the answwer: no connection to Internet. What can I do to recover the normal procedure ?

Been using Mailwasher since before Firetrust started and it has been great. After upgrading to 6.0 I can no longer add accounts and there are a few other windows in the "Options" window where the content in the window is cut off. Waiting to hear back from support. I am considering going back to 5.?. ;(

Last 24 hrs I've been putting MailWasher [trial] thro' its' paces and I have the following questions :-

(1) CHECK MAIL - alows for the viewing of ALL mail on ones server, colour coding GREEN (good) - RED (bad/spam). >>>

>>> (Q)- Upon operating PROCESS MAIL - can one 'pull-in' just the GREEN (good only) into ones MAILPROGRAM [inbox]. ?....>>> or post them [GREEN good]into a new folder in ones MAILPROGRAM ? >>>

>>> returning to ones MAILPROGRAM [INBOX] - only the GREEN(good) should be present for pulling-in >>>

BUT THIS IS NOT SO ! - upon operating steps above and then returning immediately (within seconds), to opening MAILPROGRAM 'inbox' - additional Spam is already appearing in ones server, having escaped the MailWasher filtering... and with the [INBOX] now being in 'receiving' mode, one can't stop the deluge of 'spam' entering too.

---------------------

(Q) - I wish to take advantage of multi-purchase license discount :-
[3] for workstations in same office and building and [1] for the 'administrator' in a seperate location/building, is the purchasing of [4] licenses as a 'group' okay in these circumstances ?

Thanks for your response in advance.

Sorry Val, I forgot completely to reply when I first approved this message.

But yes, 4 licenses as a group like this is entirely acceptable.  There will always be that moment between your cleaning process in MailWasher and the downloading of email into the client that is a weakness, but we are working on alternatives to that also.

Bug: On the tab for Bouncing and Outgoing Mail the text box for SMTP Server address is barely visible. It is cut off just below the top of the box. I upgraded from 5.3 to 6.0. I can not see nor alter the SMTP address as a result. Also, can not create new email account as the “Run Wizard” button is missing as is “Add Account” button and “Save” button. Informational text in the Email Account screen does not wrap and runs off of the display. Nothing appears in the “Help and Information” area and as noted the buttons described are missing. It appears that either this version is faulty or the wrong version is posted for download. Access to the support forum is broken as of 2100 Pacific Time.

Well have all those fixed very soon, new build will be ready in the next day or two.

Honestly, I do not know what I would do without mailwasher pro.
I currently receive over 3000 spam emails a day, no exageration! Mailwasher pro saves me hours a day, not to mention it restored my sanity... I can't thank you enough for the ONLY solution that I've found that works for me. Thanks very much!

Submitted by chris on Wed, 2007-12-12 04:22.

3000 ?  That's a lot.

You could consider also running MailWasher Server if you maintain your own email server, at least that way a lot of the initial junk will be removed and quarantined, and you can still use MailWasher Pro on the left overs.

Since the MW 6.1 upgrade, the startup mail check results in the error message:

"Connection was refused Ensure that the POP3 server is correct."

Nothing has changed, the POP3 settings have worked since Mailwasher was initially released, does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks.

Submitted by chris on Tue, 2008-01-22 23:17.

This kind of error after an upgrade is usually from your Firewall blocking access, check to be sure that MailWasher 6.1 has access to the internet through the Firewall.

As often Firewall consider new versions separate from the old, they often block in this manner.

I just upgraded from 5.2 to 6.1. The installation went very smoothly. I do have one negative comment: the new colors look very washed-out to me, and the highlighted message lines are difficult to read. The concept is good, but I'd like more contrast between the highlight color and the text it's highlighting.
