For your dating pleasure

Today we’ve made some slight alterations to the SiteHound ‘Site Information’ lookups and added in relevant dates associated with that website name. This information can be very useful to consider if you are ever uncertain about a website. Other times, it’s just kind of interesting.

There are three dates you will now see. Created, Updated, and Expired. The dates are not always going to be available, as some providers do not always detail all the dates and may for example, just include an expiry date.

Here are the dates explained, I’ll be using mailwasher.net as the example website (image above) or you can view the full web page here

Created :

This website name was created on:

04-Apr-2001

When website names are registered, the date is recorded. This date does not mean the website became active on this day, rather the registration process was completed and the website name has been purchased. So in this case we can see the date this website was registered is 4th April 2001.

This can be crucial information to consider if you are wary of a website, and you should compare this date with other information you can collect. Scam websites are being created all the time, but they also cannot say “in business since last Wednesday” so you can often see discrepancies between when they said their company started compared to this date.

Updated :

The details were last updated on:
16-Oct-2007

Every now and again records will be updated. This might be that the registration was renewed or some other information was altered. Here we can see that the details for mailwasher.net were last altered on the 16th October.

Expires :

Unless renewed, this website name expires on:
04-Apr-2008

When a website name is registered it’s common to register the name for a period of a couple of years, and renew this registration as required.

This is also useful information to look at and you can compare it against when the website was created. Scammers will very frequently be too cheap to register a website name for more than a year, so if the website is recently registered and is due to expire in a year’s time, you could consider this a warning sign.
